Use case: Blockchain for satellite geo-positioning

Magnificent article written by our Ambassador Juan Antonio Sáez GonzálezThe report provides us with a strategic use case of how blockchain technology can be applied to improve and optimise both the real economy and life in general.

It is fascinating to discover and spread the word with projects that not only promise, but deliver real solutions. One such project is GEODNET, which addresses a universal problem with an immediate application: improving accuracy in satellite navigation.

Satellite navigation, as useful as it is, is not perfect. Positioning errors caused by influences such as solar wind and atmospheric pollution can lead to inaccurate location data. These errors require corrections, which usually rely on costly ground-based infrastructure.

The GEODNET solution:

GEODNET proposes a decentralised network to improve correction data. It uses a technique called RTK (Real-Time Kinematic) to coordinate between satellites and ground receivers. This promises centimetre accuracy, significantly outperforming typical GPS receivers.

Created by Mike Horton, an expert in navigation technology, the Singapore-based non-profit foundation GEODNET. Mike, with a remarkable track record in the field and several patents, leads this innovative project.

Blockchain application:

GEODNET integrates Blockchain to incentivise the implementation and maintenance of a people-powered network. Users install Blockchain-linked RTK devices and are rewarded with GEOD tokens for contributing data to the network.

GEODNET runs on a cryptoeconomic architecture (Tokenomics), pre-mining one billion GEOD tokens on the Polygon Blockchain. The tokens are distributed and burned periodically to maintain the economics of the project. In addition, there are additional incentives such as Superhexes, which multiply rewards in specific locations.

Uses and applications:

GEODNET's RTK technology has great potential in a variety of industries, ranging from the agriculture until the delivery of electronic commerce and the climate monitoring. This high precision opens up new possibilities for efficiency and advanced applications.

Future and challenges:

Despite its innovative approach, GEODNET faces challenges, such as public acceptance and understanding, as well as potential regulatory hurdles. Its success will depend on expanding its network and overcoming these challenges.

GEODNET is a leading example of how Blockchain technology can be applied to solve real problems, offering an innovative and decentralised solution to the challenges of satellite navigation. Its practical and ready-to-use approach makes a significant difference in the world of cryptocurrencies and Blockchain technology.
